The Dungeon

By Neel Anil Panicker

“God, I can’t believe this is happening. And you?”

His honey dipped voice turned a scream of joy.

Alisha stopped and looked into his eyes.

The smile on John’s ever cherubic face could rival the longest river in all of England__ wider and deeper. And when a thick beam of sunlight that had sneaked past the sky high domes of the Gothic church that the two had just come out of made myriad images on his exquisitely ornate all white wedding suit, she knew she had hit the jackpot.

“Yes, my darling, I too am happy…very happy indeed.”

He stepped forward and held her hand in his.

The spartan gathering of early Sunday morning well wishers cheered from above the steps while from inside the church bells tolled as if in agreement.

And when the two newly weds first locked eyes, then lips and, then hearts, Alisha vowed she would never look back, ever.

For lurking in the guilt edged ridges of her past was Nisha, John’s first love; Alisha ‘s sister__the one she had killed.
