WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE  (250 words)

By Neel Anil Panicker

“Heard they narrowly missed you at Coimbatore?”

Pulsar Suni stretched his legs; a rock slided off the stony edges.

That was close. He had heard footsteps just after midnight. Had just about time to sneak out and scale through the outhouse walls.

He pressed the phone to his ears and spoke, ‘I need…’

The voice on the other end cut him short.

“The police are scouring all over, every district, taluka, ward, road and lane. You have no choice but to give up”.

“Where are you”, the voice prodded on.

‘In a tunnel, under some bridge, a few miles from Sengottai, bordering Kerala.’

The phone went silent for a second. Pulsar Suni bent down and caught his reflection in the flowing stream.

He coudn’t recognize himself. Gone was sturdy oak of a young man with ever vigilant eyes that gleamed like high voltage bulbs; instead what stared back was a pale, near emaciated old man with silvery hair and bed-ridden eyes that looked perilously close to popping out of their sockets any moment.

The phone buzzed again. “This time I am speaking as Advocate Sudhakaran of Kerala High Court. Orders are to ‘shoot at sight’. Here is what you do. Tomorrow, at lunch time, come via the back gates of Ernakulam District Court. I will be in my chamber with your surrender application. You’ll breathe easy in judicial custody.”

The phone went dead. Pulsar Suni spat out, ‘I should have killed her, that actress bitch instead of just raping her”.
