A YEAR ENDING WISH

By Neel Anil Panicker

Sid stared through the window at the silvery white apparition___a shimmering silhouette that emanated divine light from its every pore; the eyes, charcoal black, an all knowing steely glint in them, the hair__straight and long and cascading all the way down the curves and contours of a female form the likes of which he had never seen, and one that was even beyond the realm of his over fertile imagination.

Who could this be, the ten year old wondered as his eyes ran the length and breadth of the awesome figure that floated in the dark a mere few feet from his window___a delectable, enchanting mirage that bobbed on thin air as its feet kissed a flotilla of dreamy white clouds  under an ever changing night sky.

Still unbelieving of what he was seeing, Sid rubbed his eyes, as if the act itself would make the unnatural disappear and bring him back to the real world.

The figure didn’t oblige. Instead, it moved closer.

This time she held a golden bowl in her hand.

Her arms extended towards him.

What does she want? Where’s she come from? A goddess perhaps? But from where and why?”

A fusillade of questions assailed his beguiling mind.

He didn’t have to wait for long.

Like a microphone from the skies, a voice, honey dipped and sweet as a waterfall’s hurtling down a steep valley, spoke, “I am Bhama, your personal goddess. I will take care of you from now on. Through me you will fulfill all your wishes. See this! this bowl that I hold is no ordinary bowl. It is a cornucopia of desires. Name a desire, dip a finger, and voila! your desire turns into a reality. Simple, isn’t it?”

The ten year old stared___dumb struck; unmoving as he pondered over what he had just heard.

He was interrupted by the dreamy voice once again.

“There’s only one another thing. I appear only once a year. So, think hard before you dip your fingers for the next wish in your list can get fulfilled only next year.”

This last add on from the apparition seemed to have set his mind racing.

The ten year old closed his eyes and began to think as his mind wrestled with the umpteen wished that he wanted fulfilled. After a long indeterminably long process of weeding, selecting and rejecting from his ever burgeoning kitty of wishes, Sid zeroed in on his wish.

He opened his eyes and looking up, supplicated, “Dear Goddess Bhama, I thank you for being kind enough to shower me with your munificence. As this is my first and only wish for the year that is about to end, I want the whole of the country to benefit.”

“That’s very noble for a child of your age,” replied the figure.

“Tell me, my child, what’s do you want, and I promise it will be fulfilled right away?”.

A gleam shone in Sid’s eyes as the words tumbled out of his mouth, “I want you replace our Prime Minister”.
