Colour Me Red

By Neel Anil Panicker

“Hey Diya, it’s lights, camera, action_ it’s that time of the year when the world and its nanny put on their brightest winter wear attire, cover themselves from top to toe in comfy comfort and step on, right step forward, cruising the heavily bedecked streets, bathed in the glitzy, shimmering, kaleidoscopic colours with red, yeah, bright splashy screaming red blazing from every nook  and corner, hanging out from snow capped roof tops and floating over steep lamps and adorning the entrances of multifarious road side cafes and eateries, all promising the David shopper and passerby the time of their lives.”

Diya stated wide eyed at the parade of glitzy decor that stretched out as far as the eye could see; yet, a moment later, her heart was overcome with sadness.

This is the merry season, true, the time when the air all around is filled with unbridled joy and happiness, but is there a world outside of al this glitter and pomp, a world where there are men, women, and children who struggle to  put body and soul together,  children of a lesser God who are homeless, penniless, and even loveless? she wondered.
