A Matter Of Faith
By Neel Anil Panicker

“I am sorry, it’s a tumour that’s gone malignant and the chances of anyone recovering from fourth stage cancer is extremely slim.”

The words of the doctor, uttered in a soft half whisper in the near deserted long  corridor of the third floor hospital ward at St. Andrew’s Medical College & Hospital were a slow  dagger dug deep into Nandini’ heart.

“No, you  can’t die, you won’t die, I won’t allow you to die…”,  she muttered as she ran apft fingers across Abhinav’s rugged visage, her  lips a lilting  caress against his.

The 37 year old entrepreneur, who a mere week ago was anointed with the prized title of “Most Promising Businessman of the Year” opened his mouth as if to say something but words failed him.

The love of his life, his dear ‘Nandi’ bent down and kissed his forehead.

That night, long after the hospital corridors had become quiet, with all patients and the assorted paraphernalia of doctors, paramedics, attendants, and other general busy bodies retiring for the long night ahead, Nandi sidled beside her sick husband on the bed, and whispered into his ears,”  before exclaiming, “I have faith in you and myself and  together we will tide over this ocean of hell and swim safely to arrive yet again at the harbour of happiness.”
