three line tales, week 258: a man sitting at a desk with his back to the camera

BY THE BOOK

By Neel Anil Panicker

I writer is one who doesn’t leave the room was what 73 year old Japesh Thakur had read somewhere; the pithy line having embedded so deep in his mindscape that half a century later, the now long retired Professor of Linguistic Studies at Calcutta Univesity had still hadn’t left the room, so to say.

The result: Five full length novels, 59 short stories, and a baker’s dozen of anthologies, all devoted towards what he called his ‘pet project’—Japanese 17 syllable love haikus.

His reply to his legion of admirers far and wide, young and old,  as to what was his muse, his inspiration for such an impressive list was straight and simple: ‘I never left the room.’
