In Search Of New Skies

By Neel Anil Panicker

“What’s your horizon,”? asked Ritwik Banerjee, Senior Professor of Legal Studies to the  23- year third year old law student of National Law University.

Taken back by the sheer abruptness as well as the abstract nature of the seemingly innocuous question, the otherwise extrovert
girl stood in silence, staring blankly at the grey haired highly respected academic.

The kindly professor decided put her out if misery.

He clarified, ” I put this specific question to you, especially because you are the brightest student of my class, and what I wanted to know is that pathway have you chosen to climb and  conquer in the field of law once you graduate from our institution, young lady”?

For the first time during their mid-session tete e tete, the young girl broke into a shy smile, her dilated pupils and the twinkle in her eyes making it amply clear she had at last understood the import of her mentor’s query.

Weighing her words very carefully, Asha Srivastava locked her eyes with the man she looked upto as her idol, the man the world regarded as the foremost legal brain in the country and replied, “Sir, I don’t know what horizons I will strive to reach, but all I know is that I will follow the path that has been blazed by you”.

  1. Very touching, Neel. We are lucky if we’ve had a teacher or instructor we so admire that we strive to emulate their success.
