When finally the police tore open the wooden floor, and pulled out the contents of the eight rectangular steel boxes that were embedded not the steel walls, they were in for the surprise of their lives—small leather pouches, a hundred and fifty in all, and each containing the most glittering diamonds, several as big, a few even bigger than a grown man’s fist.

“Phew! whistled the Police Chief, and then proceeded to order his men to search threadbare the beachfront property of Sheru Khan, the notorious criminal of Cooch Behar whose bullet ridden body lay unclaimed on the front lawns.
