MURDER SHE WROTE
By Neel Anil Panicker

Esther looked at the man who lay on the granite floor, blood trickling down from his nose, his hands half twisted behind his back, the face, pockmarked  and a pair of half opened eyes staring into space.
The room, otherwise silent, reverberated with the middle aged person’s heavy breathing.

If timely medical attention were provided, this guy would survive, Esther surmised.

She bent down, and raised her left hand, and then pointed her gun at the man’s heaving chest.
The pupils of the about to be dead man’s eyes dilated, constructed, and dilated___raw, primal deathly fear plastering his face.

He opened his mouth. The lips formed an ‘O’.
But no words came out.
It wouldn’t have, even if he’d wanted to.
He was late.
Esther had pressed the trigger.
Blood oozed out of his chest; his massive 56 inch spluttered like a chicken whose slender neck has just been yanked out of her body, and then became still.
Esther looked at the lifeless form in front of her eyes, and then swiped the birth of the gun against her skirt, before getting up and walking out of the door.
The full blast of the mid-June Kolkata summer greeted her, momentarily blinding her eyes.
Nonchalantly, she flicked her Rayban glasses and stepped into the open door of the Merc that pulled up in front of her.
Once inside, and once the car sped its way past the main thoroughfares, she lighted her Marlboro and inhaled luxuriantly, the smoke invading her puffed up chest.

The man in the driver’s seat looked through the mirror, and wondered whether his boss had any heart.

Seated in the back, Esther slipped into La La Land, blissfully oblivioud to such  myopic visions of ordinary mortals.
Sleep came easy to people who had no qualms about snuffing out lives of their sworn enemies.
