THE VIGIL

By Neel Anil Panicker

“Wait, I think I saw him.”

Spreadeagled on the ground beside his boss Avijit Sarkar, Rana held his breath.

The two Kolkata Police detectives were lying in a ditch, a yellow pool of grime and silt, just off Park Street.

They’d been keeping vigil for the past seven hours, their eyes hooked onto the nondescript, red bricked, two story building across the road.

“Verma is here,”whispered Avijit as his eyes detected a slight movement behind the curtains.

“Sir, are you sure it’s him, the international criminal,” interjected Rana.

“Yes. And it’s time we pay him a visit”.
