WRITTEN FOR First Line Friday https://mindlovemiserysmenagerie.wordpress.com/2019/07/19/first-line-friday-july-19th-2019/
Your line for this week is:
They congregated up in the hills, far away from judging eyes.
LOVE IN TIMES OF LYNCHING
By Neel Anil Panicker
They congregated up in the hills, far away from judging eyes. They felt safe, there. High up in the mountains, with jagged rocks and thick leafy walls all around them, and with pin drop silence for company, they felt comfortable, comfortable enough to sit in close comfort, and gaze into the other’s eyes without the accompaniment of heart searing mind numbing guilt.
Here, in the lap of the hills, they would finally do what their hearts desired, what their senses aspired for. And that’s holding hands, cuddling up one another, exchanging rings, promises, sharing whispers, confiding secrets, promising umpteen promises, making resolutions, even exploring one another’s bodies.
They did all this and more, not once but at every single time they could. And they were careful.
They had to be.
The repercussions, were they to be caught, were unimaginably deadly.
And why not?
For, their little village, nestled in the interiors of ultra conservative rural North India, still hadn’t warmed up to the idea of a higher caste girl falling in love with a lower caste boy.
And the punishment for such sacrilege was death by stoning.
But try telling that to lovers who dwell in the other’s hearts!
