Saturday Mix – Unique Personality, 29 June 2019

By Neel Anil Panicker
The flood raged over the entire village.
All around, in small huts and tenements people, men, women, and children huddled together where ever they found themselves stranded___be it their homes, on street corners, the village vegetable market, under the rickety shade of roadside tea and banana shops, just about any place they felt safe.

The incessant rains showed no respite,
pouring down from dawn to dusk on the hapless village, and with each hour the threshold of fresh danger levels were breached, further exarcerbating the anxiety levels of the doomed residents.

Septuagenarian Ramgopal raised his head above the entrance to his thatched and inspected the skiea above.
It was painted in deep black, a brackish, darkish hue that he had never seen before in his four score sojourn on Planet Earth.

Four horizonatal lines creased his forehead and his catarct ridden eyes constricted even further as he looked around at the pools of water that had now risen to almost shoulder level all around his hut.

Resignedly, he slumped onto the mud floor.

He knew he wouldn’t survive this deluge.
He knew he wouldn’t be able to see the faces of his granchildren one more time.
