CALLING IT A DAY

By Neel Anil Panicker

‘Adjunctaddendumaugmentationsupplementappendage___call it by any other name, but the stark brutal truth is that NO, under no circumstances can I give you another extension.’

Rishabh turned from the window and looked at his wife of a shade over two four decades, his eyes betraying his inner turmoil, the pupils dilated, the irises, dark purplish red swimming pools, the rectangular mirrors of the solid teak wood library opposite him reflecting the inner sadness within them.

His hands reaches his chest as he felt a stabbing pain shoot painful darts inside his bespoke Saville Row suit, especially ordered for the grand honour that awaited him in an hour___the most sought after literary award any person on Planet Earth can dream of bagging___nothing else but the coveted Nobel Price for Literature.

Rishabh walked towards his wife who stood, impassive and unmoving, her hands to her hips at the far corner of the room, her feet position towards the rear exit door.

“It’s our marriage you are talking about, damn it, and not some telecom operator’s sloppy service that you have decided to end and not give an extension”___the words half crawled out of Rishabh’s mouth in painful half broken syllables.

‘It was; it no longer is and thanks for the non-existent service, you conceited self serving megalomaniac,’ spat out soon to be ex-Mrs Arshi Rishabh Malhotra as she stormed out of the 15th floor luxurious suite of the ultra uber Queen Victorial Hotel.

All the accolades and glory can not make up for the sadness of what could have been in a marriage.

  4. What a cruel time to announce such a termination of marriage, thus also robbing him of the joy in receiving his coveted award. I suspect that is exactly as she intended. Good story!
