‘Sir, she’s their local deity. The tribals worship her, for them she’s omnipotent; omniscient.’
Detective Chacko craned his neck and looked at the massive structure that jutted out into the azure blue skies, at the granite slates stacked one on top of the other in a , seemingly endless fashion. For long he gazed, his wide eyed expression betraying his utter sense of incredulity.
“It looks like the Giza”.
“I am sorry Sir, I don’t understand”.
“Never mind,” ‘ shot back Chacko as he lit a cigarette.
The words of his superior rang in his ears.
“Remember, it’s the non-festival season. No non-tribal is allowed inside. It’s a sacrilege, punishable by death__instant justice. You need to take the help of a local, someone very reliable.”
Chacko looked at the bony figure in front of him.
After what seemed an endless wait, the man responded, ‘Come, I’ll take you to the sanctum sanctorum. It’s at the top. There’re 11000 steps. It’s pitch dark inside. If we start now we’ll reach by sundown. Do you’ve a torch?’
Momentarily taken aback, Chacko quickly recovered, and stepped in behind.
As he ducked his head under the stones, he wondered what all he’d to do to catch a murderer.
