BEST SERVED COLD
By Neel Anil Panicker
“Welcome to the family!”.
Those four words ushered Emma’s entry into the Kapoor clan, the Kapoor family that is, the humungously huge and widespread multi-hued, multi_racial, multi faceted and multi several others, a veritable variety of varied human specimens, all living under one metaphorical roof, all owing their allegiance to the one supreme leader, the head honcho, the omnipotent patriarch who went by the rather banal aggrandizing epithet Rao Bhai Saheb.
Emma bowed and touched the feet of the septuagenarian.
A hand, warm and benign, pressed against her forehead.
She raised herself and demurely looked into the eyes of the man who was her newly minted husband’s father, and her father-in-law.
It was quite unlike any she had seen in her three score years on Planet Earth. It were two robotic black dots that were ringed by a purplish brown floating plasma.
And she stared right back into those black holes she realised she was looking into the inner soul of the Devil himself, the beast who was responsible for the death of her parents.
For an instant, time seemed to stand still as her mind traveled down memory lane, back to the time when she was a little girl, a mere five year old, playing with her parents, her father gently swinging her up in the air and catching her midway while her mother, an apparition in white, smiling that lovely benign smile of hers.
Pure bliss were those days.
“Are you alright Emma”?
Momentarily suspended, his voice, a rich brooding baritone brought her to terra firma.
“I…i’m…no…just a little tired. I’ll be fine” she mumbled before excusing herself and winding her past the teeming mass of jet setters, the creme de la creme of Cochin society who had gathered in the lawns of the 100 acre majestic family house known eponymously named KAPOOR’S to celebrate and be part of the momentous occasion of the reception of Arvind Kapoor, the first born and heir to the 100 billion dollar multi-national business empire of Virendra Pratap Kapoor aka Rao Bhai Saheb.
