three line tales, week 154: people skipping over stones in the water

I REMEMBER…

By Neel Anil Panicker

I remember everything, all those days, that day in particular, that precise moment when we ran into the ‘oh so cold’ waters and that wavy chill that ran through our thinly pre-teen bodies as our feet splashed around the froth filled evening waters of the Arabian Sea as it made love to the golden hues of the setting sun.

I remember our laughs as well as our fights, especially the big ones, remember one in  particular when we fought over who gets to keep what___the umpteen knickknacks___a bag full of tortoise shells, another that help some two score coloured bottles whose contents seemed a mystery, a few sailor jackets et al__all that we found floating on the sandy shores during one of our many nocturnal excursions to the beach that was a hop, skip and jump from our shack.

I also remember holding your frail body in my arms, so cold and still, the all round cloak of blankness that enveloped me as I cried my heart out, a heart wrenching wail of gut filled agony as salt smeared tears streamed out of my shell shocked eyes.

  1. Beautifully written Neel. Nostalgic and heart wrenching “gut filled agony” and “salt smeared tears.” Great descriptors. The ending left me so sad, yet happy for the times the speaker once had together with this girl. Also, wondering how or why she drowned.

    1. Thanks so much dear Mandi. There’s pain, as is all life, however, we dwell on the happy memories because that’s what keeps us sane and alive.
