By Neel Anil Panicker

Isaac had always been different. While his friends walked the Earth, he preferred to look up, his eyes scanning the skies, at the Milky Way beyond.

In his two and half score years on Planet Earth, he had seen them all, well almost all, including  the brightest of them all___Venus, Jupiter, and Mercury.

He loved stalking them__ the stars, the planets. Like a blip they come, then vanish___seen one moment and then, the very next, disappearing into the folds of the cumulus clouds, ever teasing and taunting and making you wait for their next ‘blink and you miss’ appearance.

Now, it was the turn of Neptune. They said the eight planet was a challenge; that it wasn’t easily visible to the naked eye.

He knows else. Knows one day, given the right time and place, the metamorphosis of that small dot into a shiny blue sphere with fluffy white streaks will happen.

That day he would savour victory__ announce to the world that he’s a stargazer.

It would be the beginning of his journey.

A journey that will take him up the hill and mountain tops, make him wake up in the dead of night and the wee hours of early morning, see him scour the desert and watch over the gigantic sea waves___a fascinating never ending quest to know what’s happening up there.

It would be a life, his life, a life he knew ordinary mortals would never ever understand.

Nice man this Isaac. He should invest in a good telescope to make his stargazing easier.
