FOWC with Fandango — Flood

CHANGING TIDES

By Neel Anil Panicker

Jacob’s hopes bobbed like the crests and troughs of sea waves, but unlike the latter, Jacob’s hopes, though an yo-yo floated in the topsy turvy flotsam and getsam of life on an annual basis.

And on one person lay the blame for this phenomenon___Laila, his soul mate, his life and blood, his single throbbing heartbeat___ the very raison de’ etre of his very existence.

Every year she changed; changed her mood; her affection; her boyfriend much like the moon that cast its long shadow over the vast span of the ocean, hiding more than revealed about the metamorphosing contours of the waters below.

On a certain year she would move away from him hiding herself in some nearby city, safe and feeling satiated in the arms of a new toy boy, and the very next year she would decide that home is where the hearth is and head back to her sea side fishing village and back to one square one___ in her case, Jacob, her faithful childhood buddy, the one to whom she gave herself for the very first time.

This year, she, the prodigal had once again returned, and boy! was he happy.

As a flood of memories dashed against his mindscape, Jacob stood by the sea shore and caressed the serrated edges of his long, fishing blade___this year he resolved there was no going back for her.
