THE QUEST

three line tales, week 140: exit sign

By Neel Anil Panicker

Raphael craned his neck and wondered which one of the several hexagonal card boards that carried in bold rainbow colours the legend EXIT and formed a perfect silhouette against the backdrop of the ever darkening evening skies was he supposed to go past.

For a while he stood there, bang in the middle of the choc-a-bloc street, utterly befuddled, scratching his head, digging his yellowed finger nails into curly unkept locks that looked as if they hadn’t made contact with soap or water for the past few weeks, desperately trying to recall which one of the sign boards led to Alfred’s Den.

And then he remembered, the words, the exact ones…’Walk past the sign board that hangs from the lamppost adjacent to Pappe De Dhaba, take the arterial lane to its left and some fifty feet further you’ll find him___to your left, first floor second room, third chair to the corner window facing the west side street.
