A SNAKE STORY
By Neel Anil Panicker
I watched them, all little kids, barely five year olds, trying their best to surmount what seemed to them and 20 odd others who were watching__an elephantine problem, which was to somehow make the snake slither out of its jute basket enclosure and dance to their tunes.
Bakery items, muffins, various sweetmeats___they threw all they could think of and lay their hands upon, even going to the extent of playing a snare drum that one of them had run back and brought in, quite plausibly from his house nearby___, in their bid to somehow get some movement, however little, from the viper.
Finally, it was left to me__the snake charmer__, tp step in extricate my long pipe from inside my near tattered cloth bag that hung from my shoulder and play a famous dance number tune from the sixties Bollywood mega movie hit of yore and voila! out slithered my ‘Roop Ki Rani’ and showed itself in its full seven feet glory to a gaped world outside even as the tots squealed and shouted in rapturous delight.
