A LOVE LETTER

By Neel Anil Panicker

Forget people ever writing to him; no living soul had ever left so much as a pithy municipal notice in his tottering black paint smeared apology of a mailbox that hung precariously from an extended pole off his rickety hilltop hut that overlooked the vast expanse of the Arabian Sea a hundred feet below.

And so it turned out to be a moment of sheer incredulity for the cataract ridden Cliff Almeida to discover that someone had dropped an off blue inland letter into his letter box.

‘Who could that be?’, wondered the man who had spent a little over four score and more years on Planet Earth as he hurriedly ripped open the letter, his hands trembling with the double coat of anxiety and sheer eagerness.

The handwriting, cursive and very lady like, with each letter rounded off to sheer precision, brought a twinkle to his eyes.

‘Dear Cliff, It’s rice and egg curry today. Your indulgence. Happy Birthday. If you behave well, there’s also chocolate cake too. Going to Christie’s. Will be back by noon.’

Cliff’s eyes turned misty and he headed for his writing table to pen his loving response to the delightful round of conversation that his dear, daring, darling wife of over half a century had initiated.
