IT’S A COLD, COLD WORLD
By Neel Anil Panicker
She seemed so distant; aloof and withdrawn, slightly eerie too, always engrossed in her own world, as if, never once deeming it right to come close to any of us, particularly we children.
It was only later, much later, long after we had all grown up, moved cities, seen a little more of the world, and understood its ways a tad better that we even began to understand her, realize how perfectly normal men and women, even animals, deprived of love and affection, shorn of dignity and the last vestiges of pride turns inwards, melancholic, forlorn and lonely to ultimately simply drown in their own well of sadness.
She was the polar bear that we cruelly left out in the cold while we shamelessly basked under the sun.
