three line tales week 90: New York subway

By Neel Anil Panicker

They move back and forth, in and out, carrying life’s myriad baggages, the flotsam and jetsam of life; their jagged expressions betraying the mundaneness of their non-existent lives.

Dragging my heavily strapped feet, I slither past them, wearing my usual smug smile that today betrays a slight tinge of arrogance, for a change, basking in the reflected glory that my self deprecating anonymity provides.

I sight them, perennially anxious men, women, children and the not yet borns, skirting, jostling, nudging, heckling and hacking their way through life’s parallel tracks, the sound systems above the din and the roar proclaiming their impending status simply as arrivals and departures, unknowing to the omnipotent reality that their fates have long been sealed inside the small little button that awaits my command.
