DEATH BY POISONING

Don Afzal Guru peered out of his East facing third floor bedroom window at the streets below. At this hour of the night an eerie silence pervaded all over.

The serpentine lanes of Old Delhi which from morning to late night raucously reverberate with the cacophony of a multitude of sounds and and voices as men and machines get down to the serious business of earning their daily bread had fallen deathly silent.

Tired and exhausted, the Old City denizens had surrendered to sleep, their bodies and minds exhausted and devoid of all energies.

Afzal Guru turned his back and ambled towards the settee.

Fixing himself a drink, he closed his eyes, but tonight sleep was playing truant and was a million miles away.

His thoughts stumbled to the past, to the early days, to his one time boss and mentor Amanullah Khan, the erstwhile mafia don under whom he received his tutelage.

Life was sweet going for him, he had just turned 30, and in just under eight years had graduated to become his right hand, his most trusted aide.

Then he had turned greedy, wanted it all, the wealth, the power, the title of Mafia Don.

It was slow poisoning, a daily dose of arsenic mixed in the biryani.

The following month Old Delhi was blessed with a new Don.
