SECRETS OF THE SEA (200 words)

By Neel Anil Panicker
Over there, the guide said.
Even before I could look up, he was sprinting up as if being chased by a hungry lioness, his bare footed strides forcing me to hasten my otherwise languid pace of walk.
Within minutes I had joined him, huffing and puffing my way to the sea-top house. His words, not mine.
I mean I had never heard of leave alone seen a seatop house in my lifetime. The place where I come from kisses the coastlines and is dotted with huge leafy landscapes teeming with palm and date trees, mango and apple orchards. And beyond, lording over them all, were the ubiquitous hills, small and large sized, over which laid out like sentinels stood innumerable hutments, a few even big enough to pass off as independent bungalows.
‘Here, take the keys’, he said, then disappeared down the slope.
It was only when he left and all I could hear were the lashing of waves and the incessant croaking of frogs did I look towards the laden rucksack that I had hauled up with me.
Now all I had to was wait until dark, and pray for the onset of high tide.
That would be ideal to dispose off the body.

Bit of a grim and unexpected ending there, Neel.
A couple of queries.
I didn’t understand ‘His words, not mine.’
And is there a bit of a typo in the subsequent line?

Yes, Ceayr, I wanted to write seatop houses. It turned out a typo. Hope now it is clear.

Did the guide know what was in the rucksack? He seemed kind of nervous.
