THE ABYSS  (250 words)

By Neel Anil Panicker

Nothing but pitch darkness-not even a shard of light that pierces through; it’s as if a giant bat has spread its huge wings and enveloped her being in a thick blanket.

Sheena’s been through such a state before, a couple of times at least.

But now, for the first time ever, she feels the cold wave of fear, a deep omniscient fear, elemental and terrifying, as though some sinister hand would spring forth from the rarefied darkish air around her and gouge out the last ounces of her breath.

As Sheena looks upwards at the melange of cracked images that ricochet off her torturous mind, she glances up suspiciously at one particular face, one that comes plastered with a perennially nauseating smile.

What kind of a person could be the owner of such a smile?  Does she know of one? Was it he one whom she fell in love with and more importantly, one whose absence torments her all the more?

Is it the latter cause that’s made her feel worse__worse enough to stop the slide into insanity?

Her memory door opens, albeit slightly; beckoning her__tantalisingly.

Sheena knew it would swing open completely and welcome her inside if she wanted to.

She also knew that few who had gone in had ever returned, in one piece that is.

The bat’s wings swirl and sweep her muddled mind yet again.

She cries and howls into the wilderness.

The battle rages between heart and mind; she knows there’s only one victor here.

  2. I didn’t expect that, a vampire is hard to fight or so I believe. A sinister response to the prompt, well done.
