ALIEN
By Neel Anil Panicker (200 words)
Al, I want us to end this?
End this? I thought we’re in love?
But…
But what, Stephie?
Truth is, I have outgrown you.
Outgrown? What’s that? Are you some plant or wild weed?
Exactly. And that’s my point, Al. I’m a human being, and I need to grow. I mean you need to grow too. We all need to grow.
Oh! Is it?
Yes, to be fair, the credit for my growth does go to you. I mean how can I ever forget how well you’ve taken care of me all this time, right from the time you found me in the gutter, all soshed, my clothes tattered, my soul battered. How you picked me up, cleaned my mental and emotional wounds, nursed me back to health, gave me back my life. How can I ever forget…?
But that’s exactly what you‘re about to do. Forget all that. Damn’t, I even lost my job, pawned my last piece of jewelry to fund your endless trips to the psychiatrist, to nurse you back to health, to put that smile back on your face.
So, it’s pay back time then?
No. I’m just sorry I fell in love with an alien.
