STRUMMING AWAY THE BLUES
By Neel Anil Panicker
“Justin wants to be one of those greats”.
‘Greats! As in Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, right?’
“Not exactly. His idols are … err…slightly different.”
‘How different can they be?’
“They are from the world of music.”
‘Ah! not surprising. All he does is strum that stupid guitar of his.’
“That stupid guitar of his was gifted by you, hubby dear”
‘A father’s rightful indulgence,’
“Well, he wants to turn professional…start his own band”
‘Oh! is it?’
“And open an ice creams company,”
‘Ice creams! I thought he was in college. Plus, he’s barely seventeen’
“He’s dropping out”.
‘Dropping college???’
“Says, ‘that’s what Jerry did”.
‘Now who the hell’s Jerry?’
“ I checked. Name’s Jerry Garcia. The guy heads a band… ‘Greatful Dead’. Is lead singer and vocalist…loves ice creams…fifty a day.”
‘He’s lost it’.
“It’s better than wanting to be Trump”.

(Some tidbits about Jerry Garcia, the rock bluegrass legend)
Before the Grateful Dead formed, Jerry Garcia cut his teeth in the early ‘60s with a folk and bluegrass band called the Hart Valley Drifters. Garcia was just 20 years old when he played in the quintet, which featured Robert Hunter, with whom he would write many Grateful Dead numbers, and David Nelson, who went on to form the New Riders of the Purple Sage.
Garcia appeared in the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind as an extra during the scenes in India in a crowd shot.[86] During the following year, the Grateful Dead would occasionally improvise the theme from Close Encounters in concert.
Garcia had a deep passion for ice creams. In 1987 along with his partner Ben Hunter he started the Ben & Jerry’s which .consisted of “cherry ice cream with cherries and fudge flakes”.
Garcia was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Grateful Dead in 1994.
