A BOTTLED LIFE  (200 words)

As the noises from above reached a crescendo, Andrew shifted uneasily in his chair.

He dug his chin in and tried his best to sleep.

The sound of six inch stiletto heels as it came crashing onto the wooden floor proved too much.

Like an accused awaiting the judge’s pronouncement, he watched her from half open eyes that were still reeling under last night’s indulgence.

She hissed and puffed her way past him, lugging along the Samsonite, past the dinner table littered with emptied out bottles of Old Monk and surprisingly, a still beckoning decanter full of colourless liquid.

She stopped at the door, then as if remembering something, dropped her case, and rushed in.

Now what was it, he thought, his liquor-dazed mind mining through umpteen possibilities.

‘Her jewellery set? Nah! Why would she require that for a week’s halt at her mother’s?’

Her books? As if her garrulous mother would allow her any time to get lost in the world of Shakespearean fantasies.

The front gates slid open, breaking his ruminations.

He looked up to see her step out.

In her hands she held the family cat.

That’s when he knew wifey dear was not coming back__ever.
