MAN WITH NO COUNTRY  (150 words)

By Neel Anil Panicker

It is a war scene outside Buffalo Niagara International Airport this Thursday afternoon.

My name is Zan Win. The last I came here was a month ago, in December. My two sons were joining us from Myanmar.

I‘ve been standing here for six hours. The placard in my hand screams ‘Silence is Betrayal.’

The sky above is one feisty insignia.

The one to my left reads, ‘No Muslim Ban’.

I turn my eyes towards its owner. Tall and heavily built, the man’s sporting a mane of delightfully unkept hair that has branched out to cover his sagging jaw line, almost eclipsing his upper neck.

He notices me noticing him, stops his war cry, and favours me with a kindly smile.

“Where are you from”?

‘Iran,’ he replies, quickly adding, “resettled Iranian immigrant”.

I am too. But, now I wonder, what that means.

  2. Dear Neel,

There seems to be a major breakdown of communication as to what that really means. Good piece.
