ON A HIGH
By Neel Anil Panicker
Robert’s nine pm fix _The News Tonight__was in full steam.
To him it was more like The Screws Tonight.
The topic: Do women swear more than men?
Six pairs of eyes cocked their ears as a woman panelist held forth. Her weapon of destruction: a face that looked as if it had been loaned by the Devil himself; her hair a hideous mass of indeterminate hue that covered most of her forehead.
She was peaking up and her gutturally irritating high pitched voice streamed a torrential wave of words.
“Fuck you, you assholes! You fucking men are the reason why we use the F-word more often”.
Even before the last syllabic sound ended, smoke billowed from the screen and dark nimbus clouds shot up to the stratosphere.
Thereafter it was a free-for-all as a flurry of cuss words rent the air.
The screen went mute as dark, nimbus clouds encircled it.
Seconds later, the anchor’s voice rose, Phoenix-like to end the show much like a white waft of sane clouds sweeping through blackish formations.
On a high, Robert switched off the TV. Until the next debate and another set of clouds.
